Humanists Malaysia is the humanist organization in Malaysia. We are a member organization of Humanists International and serve as the primary voice for humanist, non-religious, freethinking & secular individuals in Malaysia.
Operating within a complex, sociopolitical & legal environment (Malaysia has a dual legal system, Islam is constitutionally enshrined, and apostasy is criminalized in several states), Humanists Malaysia advocates for the rights of the non-religious, secularism, evidence-based public policy, critical thinking and the freedom of thought, conscience & belief. We have partnered with civil society groups, law reform coalitions, and interfaith dialogue platforms to advance this.
We have a proven track record of organizing impactful events including the ASEAN Freedom of Thought, Conscience & Belief Forum, our virtual “Humanists United!” event, our interfaith dialogues and virtual humanist education talks. We are organizing the virtual Asian Humanist Conference on the 3rd & 4th of October, 2026 and we are translating Humanists International’s Malaysian chapter of the Freedom of Thought Report into Bahasa Malaysia for Malaysians to peruse.
Our Origins & Purpose
Humanists Malaysia was founded by a passionate group of humanist, non-religious, freethinking & secular Malaysians who felt underrepresented in the country’s deeply religious public discourse. Operating in one of the most legally and socially complex religious environments in Southeast Asia, our members include Malaysians who share a commitment to reason, compassion, human dignity, critical thinking and freedom of thought.
Humanists Malaysia serves a critical function: we create a safe space for non-religious Malaysians to connect, organise, and advocate for their rights. We have organized public forums, and engaged with civil society organisations as well as relevant Government Ministries and departments on issues such as freedom of religion and belief, critical thinking, secularism, and the rights of the non-religious.
